This is a set of flashcards to support a basic chemistry practical where learners test different types of sugar and find out which one dissolves most quickly.

The flashcards show the various steps of the practical, with a photograph and simple sentence on each one. The idea of this resource is to ensure that a practical science activity is accessible to beginner EAL learners.
The flashcards can be used in a range of ways, for example to explain the task in advance, to help learners describe the process afterwards or to support them in writing about it. A list of basic connectives is included which provides additional scaffolding for oral or written tasks. There are also model sentences using examples of comparative language structures, which can be used to scaffold talk or writing about the conclusion after completing the experiment.
