States of matter

A set of tasks looking at states of matter and the particle model aimed at those in the early stages of learning English.

Learners make their own diagram by cutting and sticking the component parts including key vocabulary: freezing, melting, boiling and condensing. They learn the difference between solids, liquids and gases and complete a number of sentences describing them.

Learners begin the tasks by following a series of simple written instructions to complete a labelled diagram illustrating changing states of matter. There are four further activities aimed at expanding and consolidating their knowledge as well as a table to complete where they translate key words into their first language. Learners match phrases to diagrams, complete sentences using the words ‘solids’, ‘liquids’ and ‘gases’, write sentences using a substitution table and unscramble sentences about change of state. Answers are supplied on a PowerPoint presentation. Worksheets are in colour, with a black-and-white version provided if colour printing is not available.
